Newsletter - April 2022

Updated: Jan 30, 2023

Dear valued professionals,

Here we are at the end of April and the weather is getting cooler, but industry is definitely heating up!

Already the next edition of Beauty Forum e-magazine is about to hit your screens and you won’t be disappointed with the variety of information of what’s happening on the skin therapy front, interesting articles, news, and insight.

With Beauty Forum’s new direction and focus, it's fast becoming the most popular and well-read industry magazine in NZ, so don’t miss out. If you would like to receive a complimentary copy directly, please email Dianne: Dianne@professionalbeauty.co.nz.

On a more sober note, I have received yet another very serious burn complaint last weekend. This burn involves a full lower arm and required immediate medical care. Unfortunately, this is the fourth serious complaint I have received since January, and as usual, it appears that the therapist didn’t hold any recognised qualifications.

While you may be horrified to hear this, it has now become a familiar event and a major industry problem which indirectly affects you, your reputation, as well as directly causing extreme stress and trauma for the client and their family.

As an industry organisation we have ideas on what to do, but as a representative organisation, we represent and advocate on your behalf. So, as practicing therapists, clinic owners, tutors, what do you want done about this? If you are interested in safeguarding your reputation and that of our industry, we'd be keen to hear from you. Whether you are keen to support our work by joining the committee or have feedback and ideas you'd like to get across, please email admin@nzbpst.co.nz.

Covid Updates - Orange Setting NZ is now the Orange traffic light setting. For close proximity businesses this means:

  • Medical grade masks must be worn at work.

  • There is no limit to the number of people present at the business.

  • There is no requirement to use My Vaccine Pass or to enforce workforce vaccination requirements. However, you may continue to use them if you wish to do so.

However, these changes do not mean COVID-19 is no longer in the community. COVID-19 still remains a serious risk for vulnerable staff and clients. Face masks still need to be worn in indoor settings to reduce transmission of the disease.

Vaccine mandates remain in place for certain sectors because workers in these areas have a high level of contact with people at risk of developing serious illness. As our industry is not subject to these mandates it is your decision, as the business owner, to decide whether staff should be vaccinated. It is up to you to determine the risk for your staff and clients.

Recommendations:

  • Complete the ISICC Pandemic Infection Control Program training to help reassure you and your clients you are offering a safe clinic environment.

  • Get your Booster and ensure your staff do also. Vaccination is the best way to protect you, your staff, clients, and business. Not only are you much less likely to need hospital care, but evidence shows it lowers the likelihood of getting infected and transmitting COVID-19 to others.

  • Continue to wear masks indoors.

  • Decide whether you will maintain the Vaccine Pass system in your business.

  • Decide whether you will treat unvaccinated clients.

  • Decide whether you will introduce workforce vaccination requirements.

  • Make an Isolation Plan. Do you have enough food and medications? Are your prescriptions up to date? What about pet food and supplies?

  • Check whether you are eligible for the latest Covid Support Payments for businesses. Applications close 5 May.

  • Make a Covid contingency plan with staff about what to do if they become a close contact or test positive.

  • Maintain your Pandemic Response Plan procedures

Flu Vaccine Now Available With the opening of New Zealand’s borders, it’s likely we’ll see new types of the flu virus spreading in our communities. Pandemic measures like mask wearing and hand hygiene have meant we've had very little influenza circulating in New Zealand for the past two years, which means our community immunity is lower than usual. To protect yourself and your clients, you may wish to get a flu vaccine. It's free for those aged 65 and over, pregnant, or have certain health conditions like diabetes. For Māori and Pacific people, the free flu vaccination is available from 55 years. To get your flu vaccine, contact your GP or pharmacy.
