RoVE- Toitu te Waiora Changes to Industry Qualifications By now most of you will have heard that Toitu te Wairoa Work Force Development Council are proposing many changes to our qualifications and content.

I would like to thank all those people who answered our call to sign our petition to object to the removal and changes to the NZ Beauty Therapy qualifications and content. However, this is not the only issue we need to be aware of and voice our concerns over. To see more go to https://www.toitutewaiora.nz/

With the suggestion that more micro credentials are needed on our qualification’s framework, the Board is trying to clarify some confusion around the Intellectual Property of the developers of these micros. We will keep you posted as to the outcome. Meanwhile, NZQA are holding consultation meetings to discuss micro credentials and their function in our training framework. Once again here is your opportunity to help shape our education and training future. Go to their website for more details and have your say. https://www.nzqa.govt.nz/providers-partners/rules-consultation/ If, you want to share your visions for our future education or you disagree with what is happening to our qualifications for our industry and proposed changes please write to us. admin@nzbpst.co.nz We will happily convey your concerns to Toitu te Wairoa Workforce Development Council.

Scope of practice, a cautionary tale. Recently a client had an unidentified lesion removed from her face by a beauty therapist.

She eventually went to a new therapist, where the client complained that the area that had been treated by the previous therapist was taking a long time to heal. The new therapist felt uneasy about what she was seeing and recommended that the client visit her doctor. After several specialist appointments, the client had extensive surgery to remove a stage 3 melanoma from where the previous therapist had removed the lesion on her face. If the treated area had been left any longer the client would have lost an eye and most of her upper mandible to Cancer.

The moral of the story is, we are not medically trained and we must not work outside our scope of practice and not remove any lesions without express (preferably written) permission from a registered health practitioner.

Changes to sterilising standards in NZ The New Zealand standard for cleaning, disinfecting and sterilising reusable medical and surgical instruments and equipment, and maintenance of associated environments in health care facilities” (AS/NZS 4187: 2003) will be undergoing major changes near the end of the year. This is significant as this Standard is used by Local Authorities in determining standards to issues Health Protection Licences to therapy clinics. It’s essential that we align ourselves with the experts in the sterile science world so we can inform you of what is required.

The Board is pleased to announce an alliance and working relationship with the Sterile Science Association

Since July, Julie has been in discussion with Shelagh Thomas, the president of the Sterile Science Association. We both agree that to keep industry abreast of the best hygiene standards we need to work together.

As new standards are introduced for sterilisation, we will be notifying you all. In the meantime, if you wish to review your procedures, Sterile Science Association member, Sterile Science Solutions Ltd provide turnkey solutions to clinic sterilisation needs.

If you interested in this service, please email Sterile.science@outlook.co.nz or call Anthony Valvoi on 0276999497 We welcome your support!

If you find our communications of benefit, please consider making a donation towards the time and cost involved, or better still, join the NZ Board of Professional Skin Therapies. Our organisation has the initiative to think ahead and implement action to grow and change our industry together.
